During the 20th century, many previously imperialized colonies began to break away from their imperial power and become independent states in a process known as decolonization. These countries became independent both through negotiation, such as in India, and through fighting, such as in Algeria and Vietnam. Along with new breakaways from the imperialism of the 1800s, separatist nationalist movements rose such as Muslims in newly formed India and the Quebecois movement in Canada. These decolonization movements had profound impacts on the political climate of the 20th and 21st centuries.
