Definition

Hyperparathyroidism is a condition characterized by the excessive production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands, which are four tiny glands located near or attached to the back side of the thyroid gland. This overproduction leads to high levels of calcium in the blood, affecting various body systems.
