Tonsils

from class:

Anatomy and Physiology I

Definition

Tonsils are small, lymphoid tissues located at the back of the throat that play a role in the body's immune system by trapping and removing bacteria and other pathogens from entering the body through the mouth or nose. They are part of both the lymphatic and immune systems, acting as the first line of defense against ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens.
