Negative selection

from class:

Anatomy and Physiology I

Definition

Negative selection is a process in the thymus where developing T lymphocytes (T cells) that strongly react against self-antigens are induced to die, ensuring that these self-reactive T cells do not enter the circulation. This mechanism is crucial for preventing autoimmune diseases by eliminating potential auto-reactive T cells during the development of the adaptive immune response.

congrats on reading the definition of negative selection. now let's actually learn it.
