Definition

The thymus is a small, lobulated organ located in the upper anterior portion of the chest cavity, crucial for the development and maturation of T-lymphocytes (T cells), which are essential components of the adaptive immune system. It gradually shrinks after puberty, but its early-life function is critical for establishing a robust immune defense.
