AP US History
Unit 1 – Interactions North America, 1491–1607
Topic 1.4
Why did many Native American societies collapse following European contact?
Meteorological changes such as extended drought periods led to widespread famine that wiped out most of the Native American societies before Europeans arrived in large numbers.
Native American societies voluntarily assimilated into European cultures and abandoned their own traditions entirely without any external pressures.
They faced overwhelming diseases, military conquest, enslavement, and cultural disruption from Europeans.
Africans brought by Spaniards as slaves rebelled en masse against both their masters and local indigenous tribes leading to societal collapse.
