Unit 6 – Developmental Psychology
Topic 6.5
How has the understanding of plasticity in adult brains evolved over time?
Brain plasticity was believed nonexistent in adults until recent studies showed all brains have some degree of plasticity.
It was previously thought that adults could not generate new brain cells; this view has been overturned by modern neuroscience discoveries.
The belief that brain plasticity does not change after childhood is still widely accepted today despite contradictory evidence.
Early research suggested the adult brain remained flexible throughout life, but newer studies suggest neural plasticity decreases with age.
