We moved from understanding these as complex systems back to seeing them as simple processes.
There was a shift from believing chemical senses were simple processes to recognizing their complexity involving receptor proteins and molecules.
It was discovered that we do not actually possess chemical senses at all.
Our understanding changed from believing we only had three chemical senses to knowing we have five distinct ones.
