AP Psychology
Unit 1 – Scientific Foundations of Psychology
Topic 1.1
Why do people follow social norms according to social psychological theories?
The sole reason people follow social norms is because they are genetically programmed to do so.
People tend to conform due to both informational influence (believing others are correct) and normative influence (wanting to fit in).
Following social norms is solely a result of observing others being rewarded for conformity and wanting the same rewards.
Social norms are typically followed out of fear for punishment alone.
