Definition

Alkaloids are a class of naturally occurring organic compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic structure and exhibit significant physiological effects on humans or animals. They are typically found in plants and are basic (alkaline) substances due to the presence of the nitrogen atom.
