Plasmolysis

from class:

Microbiology

Definition

Plasmolysis is the process in which cells lose water in a hypertonic solution, causing the cell membrane to pull away from the cell wall. This often leads to cellular dehydration and reduced metabolic activity.

congrats on reading the definition of plasmolysis. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. Most commonly observed in plant cells due to their rigid cell walls.
  2. Occurs when the external environment has a higher solute concentration than the inside of the cell.
  3. Can be reversed if the cell is placed back into an isotonic or hypotonic solution.
  4. Plasmolysis is rare in prokaryotic cells as they often regulate osmotic pressure differently.
  5. This process can inhibit microbial growth by creating unfavorable conditions for cellular functions.

Review Questions

  • What environmental condition causes plasmolysis in cells?
  • How does plasmolysis affect microbial growth?
  • Can plasmolysis be reversed? If so, how?
