History of Native Americans in the Southwest
The Wilmot Proviso was an 1846 proposal aimed at banning slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War. The proposal highlighted the growing sectional tensions between the North and South over the issue of slavery, as it sought to prevent the expansion of slavery into new territories. Although it never passed in Congress, the Wilmot Proviso became a significant political symbol for anti-slavery sentiments and contributed to the emergence of the Free Soil Party.
