5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. The duodenum is about 25-30 cm long and forms a C-shaped curve around the head of the pancreas.
  2. It receives acidic chyme from the stomach through the pyloric sphincter.
  3. Bile from the liver and gallbladder, as well as digestive enzymes from the pancreas, enter the duodenum to aid in digestion.
  4. The duodenal lining contains Brunner's glands, which secrete mucus to protect it from acidic contents.
  5. Absorption of nutrients begins in the duodenum, where fats are emulsified by bile salts.
