Cones

from class:

General Biology I

Definition

Cones are photoreceptor cells in the retina responsible for color vision and visual acuity in bright light. They are concentrated in the central part of the retina called the fovea.

congrats on reading the definition of cones. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. Cones contain photopigments such as opsins that respond to different wavelengths of light.
  2. There are three types of cones, each sensitive to one of three colors: red, green, or blue.
  3. Cones are less sensitive to low light levels compared to rods.
  4. The fovea contains a high density of cones but no rods.
  5. Damage to cone cells can lead to color blindness and other vision impairments.

Review Questions

  • What is the primary function of cone cells in the human eye?
  • How do cone cells contribute to color vision?
  • Where in the retina are cone cells most densely packed?
