Executive Order 9981 was issued by President Harry S. Truman on July 26, 1948, establishing the policy of desegregating the armed forces and ensuring equal treatment and opportunity for all service members regardless of race. This order marked a significant early step in the civil rights movement, setting a precedent for later efforts to end racial discrimination in various sectors of American life, and also played a role in shaping attitudes during the Cold War as the U.S. sought to present itself as a champion of democracy and human rights.
