Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Definition

This is Erikson's second stage of psychosocial development, happening roughly between ages 2-3 years old. Children at this age start to assert their independence; if encouraged and supported in their increased independence, they become more confident and secure in their own ability to survive in the world.
