Definition

Progesterone is a steroid hormone released by the corpus luteum in the ovary, placenta, and adrenal glands that plays a key role in the female menstrual cycle and maintaining the early stages of pregnancy. It prepares the body for conception, regulates the menstrual cycle, and supports fetal development.
