Definition

Perforin is a protein produced by certain immune cells, such as natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, that forms pores in the membranes of targeted cells leading to cell death. It plays a critical role in the body's innate immune response by helping to eliminate infected or cancerous cells.
