Neurotransmitters are chemical substances released by neurons (nerve cells) that transmit signals across a chemical synapse, such as the junction between two nerve cells or between a nerve cell and a muscle cell. They play a crucial role in the functioning of the nervous system by influencing or modulating bodily functions.
