Definition

The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance inside the cell that surrounds all cellular components, except the nucleus, and is composed of water, salts, and proteins. It plays a critical role in maintaining the cell's shape, providing a site for many biochemical reactions necessary for the cell's survival.
