Definition

Chondrocytes are specialized cells found within cartilage that are responsible for maintaining the cartilaginous matrix, which includes producing and maintaining the extracellular components such as collagen and proteoglycans. These cells derive from chondroblasts that become embedded in the matrix they produce.
